BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Former Bills players teamed up with the Police Athletic League on Friday to inspire children by sharing skills, drills, and lessons they can use on and off the field.
“It’s not just about football, it’s about social skills, it’s about civic duty, it’s about education,” said Executive Director of Police Athletic League of Buffalo Nekia Kemp. “So, while they’re out there throwing a football, they’re having these conversations about life and lessons and the kids really love that.”
The third annual Buffalo Bills Alumni Legends NFL Flag Football Camp was filled with children excited to learn from the greats.
“It feels pretty good to learn from them,” said 11-year-old Tristan.
“It makes me feel like I’m going to be one because anything’s possible as long as you believe in yourself,” said Lynn.
There’s a lot of excitement heading into football season especially it being the farewell season for the current Highmark Stadium.
“Hey Josh, not putting any pressure on your guys, but I think this is the year,” said Jerry Butler, who was a wide receiver for the Bills in the 80s. “We’re all going to celebrate the life of the Ralph, and what it stood for for the community and a lot of guys have obviously been a part of that so we’re looking forward to finishing out this season on top.”
“I’m hoping that the Bills will recognize that there were a lot of guys that played on that field over the years, and that maybe they’ll bring us all back at the very last game and we can wave everybody goodbye,” said President of the Buffalo Bills Alumni and former defensive back Jeff Nixon.
Some of the Bills alumni shared with us some memories and the aspiration that stadium brought to them.
“One of my favorite all time things to do was come down that tunnel and just listen to the crowd slowly get louder and louder as we got closer to the field and then to be announced and run out and then play is just, there’s not too much that can compare with that,” Nixon said.
“I don’t know if it’s the memory other than just the hope and wish that I always wanted to see a Super Bowl team in that stadium and this has to be the year,” Butler said.
